Ponte da Barca
Located in a green region on the banks of the Lima River, it is thought that Ponte da Barca got its name from the boat that connected the two banks, before the bridge was built in the XVIII century. This region was formerly known as Terra da Nóbrega or Anóbrega, which is thought to derive from the Roman name "Elaneobriga".
The historic center of the village with manor houses (some adapted to housing tourism) and beautiful monuments from the XVIII centuries. XVI-XVIII deserves a careful visit, as well as its surroundings, in which the Romanesque Church of Bravães of the XVIII century stands out. XIII and the Castle of Lindoso (century. XIII) that played an important role in the defense of the region.
In the Demarcated Region of Vinho Verde, part of the municipality is inserted in the Peneda Gerês National Park, which offers excellent sports and leisure activities.
Ponte da Barca is one of the four municipalities that make up the Lima Valley. In this region, walking the Route of the Giants is a way to get to know the places where four great historical figures were born who took Portugal to the four corners of the world.
Ferdinand Magellan the Navigator, from Ponte da Barca, commanded the first circumnavigation voyage proving that the Earth is round. In Ponte de Lima was born Blessed Francisco Pacheco (The Saint), Messenger of the Society of Jesus and one of the first Jesuit missionaries in Japan. João Alvares Fagundes (the Discoverer), from Viana do Castelo, explored and discovered Newfoundland in the North Atlantic, an important cod fishing area. Originally from Arcos de Valdevez was Father Himalaya, the inventor, scientific scholar of renewable energies who represented Portugal at the Universal Exposition in St. Louis, in the United States.
