In 1734, the decline of commerce in Portimão caused many families to abandon the village, looking for other places with more opportunities. The earthquake of 1755 also affects this region. For this reason, even more people will leave the region. Corsican and piracy had long since become a scourge along the Portuguese coast. It was an organized and systematic practice, carried out by the various powers that competed for the domination of the seas and the lucrative trade routes. The Algarve coast was particularly hard hit by Moorish piracy.Since the mid-16th century, the defence of the Algarve coast against attacks and attacks by Berber and Algerian pirates has become a permanent concern of our monarchs. These frequent attacks were aimed at assaulting ships that circulated along the coast and robbing and plundering coastal populations, especially during harvest season. However, it was during the Philippine period that a large number of coastal fortification works were carried out. The new threat of artillery thus forced a rethinking of the entire structure of defensive systems. For this reason, bastioned fortresses began to be built, capable of responding to the new demands of war. City for a week – the first elevation to years later, after the terrible earthquake of 1755 that destroyed Lisbon but also the main towns of the Algarve, the Marquis of Pombal drew up an audacious plan: to make Portimão the seat of a bishopric, elevating it to a city and integrating into its boundary the unprotected town of Alvor, land of the Távoras that King D. História de Portimão Na cidade de Portimão, existem atualmente vestígios do seu passado quinhentista, visíveis no traçado das ruas, na Igreja Matriz e no Convento de São Francisco.
